Un comparativo enfrenta dos cosas: This beach is nicer than that one. This is the nicest beach in Costa Rica.
- in + lugar o grupo: the best student in the class, the tallest volcano in the country.
- of + período de tiempo o conjunto contado: the best day of my life, the worst of the three.
Corto lleva -est, largo lleva the most: la regla de las sílabas
La decisión entre -est y the most no es gusto: la decide el largo del adjetivo.
| Adjetivo | Regla | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| Una sílaba (fast, tall, big) | -est | the fastest, the tallest, the biggest |
| Dos sílabas terminadas en -y (happy, easy, funny) | -y → -iest | the happiest, the funniest |
| Dos sílabas o más (exciting, beautiful, difficult) | the most + adjetivo | the most exciting, the most beautiful |
Exciting tiene tres: the most exciting.
the best movie + I have ever + seen
That's the best movie I have ever seen. (Es la mejor película que he visto.) It was the most exciting trip I have ever taken. That was the worst food I have ever tried.
- One of the + superlativo + sustantivo en plural: Poás is one of the most visited volcanoes in the country.
- by far para reforzar: It was by far the best day of the year.
- La experiencia: Last December I went to Cahuita with my family.
- El detalle que la hace máxima: We saw sloths and the water was warm.
- El superlativo como cierre: It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen.
- El sentimiento: I felt amazed. / I'll never forget it.
Ejemplos resueltos
1. Completá: «It was the ____ day of my life.» (happiest / most happy) happiest. Most happy choca con esa regla.
2. ¿Qué está mal en «This is the most easiest exam»?
3. Traducí: «Es la mejor comida que he probado». It's the best food I have ever tried.
4. ¿Por qué «Irazú is one of the highest volcano» está mal? Lo correcto es one of the highest volcanoes.
5. Elegí: «Which is ____ month of the year for you?» (the most bad / the worst) the worst.
Para reforzar existe by far.
- Quitar el the. She is fastest runner queda coja.
- Mezclar comparativo y superlativo. This is the nicer beach in Limón compara dos, pero in Limón anuncia un grupo entero: ahí va the nicest.
- Poner than después de un superlativo. Than pertenece al comparativo. Con superlativo se usa in o of: the best of the year, no the best than the year.
- Olvidar el plural en one of the….
